The relationship between brothers in the royal family is a phenomenon rooted in history and been manifested in different states in all periods of historical time. They could range from close relatives to hostile ones. As a rule, the reason for the latter option was the death of the king-father, when the crown was to pass to the eldest heir. As a result, various disagreements began due to land divisions, material inheritance, and finally, struggle for the throne. The study is an attempt to analyze the status and position of the prince, the younger brother of the king, in the socio-political hierarchy of the royal court. Basing on the analysis of the personal sources, we would show the position of the younger sons at the French court, on the example of the younger brother of Louis XIV, Philip of France, Duke of Orleans (1640–1701). Within the framework of this article, we adhere that the relationship between the brothers, one way or another, tended at best to the faithful service of the younger brother to his king and the conscious suppression by the king of any personal manifestations on the part of the younger, respectively. Having proved that the example of the relationship between Louis XIV and Philip I of Orleans is not an isolated one, the author also turns to the experience of the relationship between the sons of Henry II of Valois and Henry IV of Bourbon.
