The review is devoted to a new book by the medievalist and researcher of the history of the papacy from Saint Petersburg Irina Pavlovna Potekhina, which briefly and professionally outlines the evolution of the institution of popes, from Roman times until the middle of the 8th century, the time of the creation of a theocratic state in the center of Italy. Based on a wide range of sources, taking into account the results of key historical works of domestic and foreign researchers, the author reveals the main milestones and reasons for the gradual and steady rise of Roman bishops who claimed spiritual and political supremacy in the European world.
